For many people, losing a tooth can be an upsetting experience, as they will understandably have concerns about their appearance and eating ability. However, there is a range of treatment options available that patients can discuss with their dentist when it comes to replacing their missing tooth or teeth. A dental bridge offers an alternative to a partial denture or a full implant.
It is important to consider replacing a missing tooth for more than just aesthetic reasons. When a tooth is removed, the teeth on either side of the gap begin to take the additional strain, which can cause them to weaken, and your bite can be affected. Food packed into the gap can also lead to further tooth decay and gum disease. A dental bridge usually involves crowns being placed on the teeth on either side of the gap, which is then joined together by placing a false tooth in the space. In some circumstances, we are able to fit the bridge to the surrounding teeth using modern bonding techniques, as opposed to using crowns.
Dental bridges are made in a laboratory, and we currently offer the most advanced materials and techniques. When the bridge is fitted by your dentist, they will cement all the pieces in place using special adhesives for a strong, secure bond that cannot be removed. Therefore, bridges are only suitable for patients for have strong enough teeth either side of the gap, and good bone support.
Your new bridge should last for many years, but it is important to take good care of your teeth at home to prevent further problems. Your dentist will show you the best way to do this, including using a bridge needle or special floss to clean under your false tooth where a normal toothbrush cannot reach, and recommend regular dental hygiene appointments.
